Prevents scorching, burning and boil overs. Can be used on electric or gas stovetops. This flat, metal stovetop tool distributes heat evenly and automatically lowers the flame setting. This comes in handy particularly when cooking heat-sensitive items like rice, oatmeal, milk, gravy and braises. Also ideal when melting caramel and chocolate! The perforations work to distribute the intensity of the heat directly hitting the bottom of the pan, so the chance of burning is virtually eliminated. Protects glass and porcelain from overheating and cracking. Features a wooden handle so you can move it without the risk of burning yourself, and equipped with a leather hang band so it can be hung alongside your stove for easy access. Great for home, camping and RV. Made of tin. Hand wash. Norpro was founded in 1973 with a vision to design, manufacture, and supply the highest caliber kitchenware. Customers say
Customers find the aroma diffuser functional and effective for cooking. It helps dissipate heat evenly and prevents hot spots. However, some customers have experienced issues with the handle being fragile and breaking easily. The metal handle can burn or discolor over time. There are mixed opinions on value for money and quality.

Works wonderfully under my tajine (Moroccan clay stew pot)! 🙂
I bought this heat diffuser because it was suggested to use one with the tajine (Moroccan clay stew pot) I ordered the same day, on the electric stove (spiral coil). It works really well for that purpose, and my tajine did not crack.A few reviewers complained about the handle getting too hot to touch / smoking / making a bad smell. In my experience, I had no problem whatsoever, and none of this happened: the diffuser did not stink, smoke, nor got too hot to the touch (the wooden part, that is, as the metal part does get hot).Of course, I used the diffuser on medium low temperature. It is not intended to be used on high temperature (at least with a tajine), so I suspect that the users who had the problems above did use the diffuser with too high a heat setting.I am delighted I bought this Norpro heat diffuser, as it protects my tajine, helps the cooking to be even, and does the job nicely. So I would buy another one if I get another tajine, or need a replacement down the line.It is not expensive, and protects your cooking equipment, so I suggest that you buy one too!

Best for med-high or less heat
I have this for a long time and it’s still in great condition. It has not been placed on my electric burner passed medium heat. I mostly use for tagine which I cook at least once a week. So the reddish looking side is what faces down on burner. I have another one with metal handle from different company. I will tell u that this will not work on glass stove becoz it doesn’t lay flat. I only washed it once when I first got it. I just leave it alone after that. I’m trying to understand why many of you are washing it after each use? It’s soiled perhaps? So this is a good product, but only for med high or less as I believe high heat will destroy this weaker product. Oh and don’t wash it! I hope you success with it lovely people.

Triple failure
Foolishly bought this 3 times, focused on the low price. Bad idea. All three failed where the handle attaches to the disk. Heat diffusion works fine, handle attachment failed all three times. Looking for a similar product which has been engineered to withstand the environment in which its use is intended. (Hello, materials engineer(s)?!)

Works Well, But Handle Burns
We have communal propane in our neighborhood (grumble grumble). That stuff burns ridiculously hot. So hot, we simply couldn’t simmer anything. We pretty much have super hot boil and regular hot boil. Then, a friend introduced me to the heat diffuser. What a lifesaver. I does what it says and diffuses the heat. Now, I can set the smallest eye to its lowest setting and simmer a big dutch oven all day without burning the bottom of the dish.It tells you that this is not to be used with high heat, but even at lower temperatures the wooden handle heats up enough to smoke. This was no problem for us. Since we will really only attempt to simmer on the smallest eye, we took off the “slip on” handle and just leave the base plate of the diffuser on the stove.A friend recently gave me a different style of diffuser: The Heat Master Flame Tamer (http://www.amazon.com/8-HEAT-MASTER-FLAME-TAMER/dp/B005280R76/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1357235312&sr=8-6&keywords=heat+diffuser+for+gas+stove). The Flame Tamer blows this one out of the water. It has no handle to heat up and burn. It is designed to stay on the stove. And, it uses an air gap to diffuse the heat, so it can handle higher temperatures and diffuses the heat over a greater area.If you need to move a diffuser around while the base plate is hot, go with the Norpro. If you don’t intend to move the diffuser around, go with the Flame Tamer. Either way, if you can’t simmer now, you’ll be stoked when you get either one of these diffusers.

Saves pots and pans from overheating
Does the job it supposed to. Have same one in kitchen over twenty years plus. Handle was burned and finally fell off. Keep the handle out of flame. Good news you can use without handle just don’t touch. This is a very good product. Wash before using stated in instructions.

Not for Electric Stoves
Recommended by a friend, so I bought one. Really doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do if the stove is electric. If you raise the pot or pan off the heat and place the diffuser underneath, the pot or pan is getting no heat. I can see this working great on a gas stove.

Excellent Diffuser
Nice and handy. Not really built for longevity but it will get the job done. Sauces simmer beautifully on this little diffuser !!

Works great and no smoking
I ordered two of these, one Norpro and one of a another brand. They’re almost identical. There was a note enclosed that recommended washing before use to prevent smoking. I followed the recommendation and had absolutely no smoking or odor.It works perfectly on my gas stove. I’ve been frustrated for years because I couldn’t adjust the flame low enough to warm or gently simmer sauces and soups.Yes, the wood handle singes near the metal, but it’s better than melting plastic or a hot all-metal handle. It doesn’t bother me at all. I’m just careful to place it out of direct contact with the flame. It’s definitely worth the price.Edit 1/28/12: Still using it after 2+ years. The handle near the metal got a little singed, but just on the surface. It works great and I still love it.
