Sometimes, you might catch yourself thinking with your feelings. For example, you might think to yourself, “I feel bad, therefore I must have done something bad.” Or, “I’m anxious, which means bad things will happen.” Write about any strong feelings you’ve had lately. What thoughts have they prompted?

Regret is something a lot of trans people experience. Maybe you wish you had come out sooner, or maybe you envy people who got to make physical changes to their bodies earlier than you did. It’s possible to acknowledge regret without having to “fix” it or let it deter you from future opportunities. Write—without judgment—about a regret you have.

Making body changes—whether they are tangible changes, like getting physical therapy, or more abstract changes, like improving your body image—takes time. Write about a change you’re working toward that’s going slowly. Why is it important to take your time?

    YES
The trans teen in my life has been struggling in a big way. I logged on to Amazon for something else and this book was one of the first things I saw by chance. I kind of felt like it was meant to be. After reading the reviews on this and the Gender Identity Workbook, I picked both up right away.First, I appreciate the approach this journal takes. It’s not “preachy.” Although it’s not a replacement for a counselor, it builds up mindfulness and self-awareness. I’m not a clinician but I do have a background in psychology and everything I found in it was built on sound and accepted practices. I often see a lot of fringy junky stuff in the self-help section. This was clearly written by someone with in-depth knowledge and understanding of the topic. Granted, I didn’t read the whole thing. The teen was present when the book arrived. We looked at it briefly together and then they whisked it away. And, that’s probably the most important thing- that it was accepted and is being used by the recipient. Between this workbook and the other book I picked up, they’re often bringing me passages or bits of info to share. It’s starting a lot of positive and helpful discussions about emotions, what it means to be trans, the struggles they’re coping with, and so forth.Prior to this, I was getting a whole lot of “you don’t understand” from the kiddo. (They’re 13.) I still get that, but now the discussions deepen, possibly in part because they feel supported simply because I gave them this book, but also because I think they’re feeling more validated in knowing that what they’re feeling/ thinking is normal and that it’s a process. I’m really glad I found this.

Amazing guided journal from an excellent author
First of all, I strongly encourage readers to check out his other book, gender identity workbook for teens, which is also an amazing resource not only for teenagers, but for anyone figuring out their identity. Written by a trans person for trans individuals, these books focus on self-love and self compassion, with strong backing by psychology-based practices (Author Andrew Triska is himself a mental health professional). The prompts and activities are so thought-provoking, and it’s a great way towards self help and self-care. They are meant to build resilience, to better understand yourself, to be able to articulate complicated sensations and emotions. Before starting these types of journals recently, I used to think that focusing on the difficult feelings would just make them worse and amplify them. I was wrong. I was still ruminating and experiencing them, but in an unproductive way that caused them to come back worse than ever. This allows you to analyze these feelings from a more mindful place of detachment and observation, without judgement. It’s really giving me clarity after just a short time, and the whole process is quite validating when combined with his approach and the quotations inside the book. I also like the amount of space given to answer the prompts. Not so much that it’s overwhelming, but enough to get out what you need to get out. The colorful graphic design is also a plus that makes the experience feel less stressful. Excellent book. I highly recommend this resource and author!

Great writing exercises for the trans person in your life
The one thing I didn’t love was that the pages are almost lined like paper for elementary school kids. Big wide lines, as if you were going to write great big letters. Which isn’t that big a deal, honestly. Plenty of people know they are trans at that age, too. Some of the questions are worded more for older people, and some for anyone. Great tool for any age trans person! This book is filled with mindfulness type of writing prompts, but directed toward the struggles a trans person can go through. Some of them are hard to answer, emotionally. I’d like to see this ship as two of the same book, or have two pages of the same questions. Answer one now, and one in a year. See how you have changed. But it’s easy enough to just buy two books! The text is easy to read, there is plenty of space to write on each page. This would be a great tool for therapists, too.

    Emotionally Intense Prompts, but Rewarding
Not all of the prompts in this book, The Transgender Self-Care Journal: Prompts and Practices to Care for Your Beautiful Self, will be helpful for everyone, but it’s a carefully and empathetically crafted project to help with self-reflection and self care.A lot of the prompts require a lot of vulnerability to put into words. Others are made to help see what can be gained from giving that effort and openness. Additional ones are just made to be enjoyable and reassuring. I haven’t made time to write out responses to a lot of them yet, and I certainly struggle with understanding my emotions and feelings often. I can see from what I have done that this book will be helpful for me to work through. I hope other queer readers find it helpful too. It’s hard to be certain what we will find when we look for some new therapist’s methodology or some new and niche form of treatment. Triska seems aware of the shortcomings of many psychotherapy self help practices in the way he navigates this journey. I appreciate this journal and look forward to continuing to take advantage of its guidance.
